The Coastal Path: A Hidden Treasure of the Basque Coast

The Basque coastal path, winding along the cliffs between Bidart and Hendaye, is one of the most beautiful seaside hikes in France. Over roughly 25 kilometers, the trail offers jaw-dropping views of the Atlantic Ocean, the Spanish Pyrenees, and the wild coastline. Unlike the coastal paths of Brittany or Normandy, the Basque coastline stands out for the sheer verticality of its cliffs, the power of its waves, and the mildness of its climate, which makes hiking possible almost year-round.

The Corniche Basque: The Most Spectacular Section

The route can be completed in a single day by experienced walkers, or broken into stages to fully enjoy each section. Every stretch has its own character: the grassy cliffs of Bidart, the beaches of Guethary, the spectacular corniche between Saint-Jean-de-Luz and Hendaye. The path is marked and maintained, though some sections demand good fitness and proper footwear. The rewards match the effort: grand panoramas await around every bend.

La Rhune: The Iconic Summit of the Basque Country

Between Ciboure and Hendaye, the Corniche Basque is the jewel of the coastal path. The cliffs plunge vertically into the ocean, sculpted by millions of years of erosion into extraordinary geological formations. The flysch — tilted layers of sedimentary rock that rise from the sea like the keys of a giant piano — are a geological spectacle unique in Europe. This lunar landscape, battered by waves, fascinates geologists and photographers alike.

Secret Coves and Wildlife

The corniche is also home to the Domaine d'Abbadia, a protected natural area of 65 hectares perched above the ocean. The Chateau d'Abbadia, built in the 19th century by Viollet-le-Duc for the scientist Antoine d'Abbadie, dominates the cliffs with its neo-Gothic silhouette. The walk around the estate is a must: wildflower meadows in spring, russet-coated Highland cattle, and sweeping views over the Bay of Txingudi compose a scene of striking beauty.

If coastal hiking is not enough for you, climbing La Rhune (905 m) offers an entirely different walking experience. This iconic summit, visible from almost the entire Basque coast, can be reached on foot in about two hours from the Col de Saint-Ignace. The trail passes through heather and gorse moorland, pastures where pottoks — the small wild Basque horses — graze, and forests of wind-stunted oaks.

The summit of La Rhune offers a sweeping circular panorama: on one side, the Basque coast and the Atlantic stretching to the horizon; on the other, the Pyrenean chain and the mountains of Navarre. On a clear day, you can see Bayonne, Biarritz, San Sebastian, and even the peaks of Bearn. For those who prefer to save their legs, the little rack railway up La Rhune, running since 1924, makes the ascent in 35 minutes in vintage wooden carriages that add to the charm of the excursion.

Along the coastal path, a few secret coves are accessible only on foot via steep trails. These small wild beaches, wedged between cliffs, offer rare privacy and crystal-clear water. One of the most beautiful is Senix beach, between Guethary and Saint-Jean-de-Luz, reached by a stairway carved into the rock. In summer, it is a haven of peace away from the packed beaches, a place where you can swim in turquoise water in near-solitude.

The Basque coast is also a refuge for wildlife. The cliffs are home to colonies of gulls and cormorants, and in autumn, the mountain passes of La Rhune and Organbidexka are among the best spots in Europe for watching migratory birds. At sea, dolphins are a frequent sight, and whale-watching expeditions sometimes spot these majestic creatures as well. It is a reminder that this preserved coastline is a living ecosystem of remarkable richness.
